Books on UNIX
One of the two main "operating systems to know" for interactive developers, understanding UNIX gives you the knowledge you need for a variety of platforms (including UNIX-varients like Linux, Solaris and IRIX). As in any operating system, you really want two books: a good, thick technical manual for reference and a easier tutorial on the basics.

UNIX for Dummies
UNIX For Dummies, 3rd Edition, is the practical, easy-to-understand guide for anyone who wants quick explanations of all essential UNIX functions. Yup -- it's as easy as the other "Dummies" books and a great "I've got to learn UNIX?" book.
