Guide to Unverified Links
If an incoming hyperlink is reachable (meaning, it doesn't get categorized as "Unreachable") but the LinkTrakker spider is unable to verify the existence of a link to your website, it gets classified as "Unverified." These links aren't garbage - in fact, most of them are likely to be real links to your website, which failed verification because:
- Dynamic Content - sometimes links aren't always on a webpage: dynamic user pages (like MSN and My Yahoo), banner bar advertisement (that rotates), and "random links" all might have a link to your website for one user (or at one time) and then not when LinkTrakker attempts to verify. As a general rule, if an unverified link tracks more than one visitor, it's probably an example of dynamic content.
- Non-Public Webpages - some links that point to your site might only be available to "members" or "subscribers" of a particular website. In these cases, LinkTrakker is denied from seeing the Webpage, so it cannot verify a link's existence.
- Garbage Information - sometimes the previous page a user was on has nothing to do with you whatsoever (for example, if they just type in a URL and go directly to you). As a general rule, these kinds of "garbage links" seldom have more than one visitor logged through them.
- Access Failures - occasionally, the remote server that has a link to you will not respond to LinkTrakker's spider (for example, if the load on their server is heavy or their webserver has crashed).
