Directions:

In order to install Personals/Classifieds, you must have one of the following:

  1. Administrator access to the IIS server manager

  2. Arranged with an administrator the creation of the necessary directories. If you are to run the installation program, you will need the necessary permissions for copying files.

The following directories must be created before running the installation program:

  1. A CGI directory - for storing the perl scripts and databases
    Ex. C:\InetPub\Scripts\Personals_Classifieds\

  2. A webdocs directory - for storing images, template files and possibly html archives of the discussions.
    Ex. C:\InetPub\wwwroot\Personals_Classifieds\

We recommend taking a moment at this point to make sure the required directories and files were included in your Personals/Classifieds .zip file.

You are now ready to run the installation program.

Step 1: Ensure that PERL scripts will run on your webserver.

For IIS 2.0, You will need to use the Registry editor to add a mapping so that perl scripts are executed properly (it is assumed that Active State's perl is used). Add a new value for the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Services
W3SVC
Parameters
Script Map

of the form:

.pl => C:\Perl\Bin\Perl.Exe %s %s

If you installed Perl in a different location, substitute the correct directory as necessary. You will then need to grant execute permissions for the specified CGI directory using the IIS2.0 server manager.

For IIS 4.0, the IIS 4.0 server manager provides a mechanism for allowing Perl CGI scripts to execute. Simply select the Personals/Classifieds directory you created from the menu of WWW directories and create an application for it -- call it Personals_Classifieds or anything else you like.

Now, using the "configuration" utility, make sure you see a mapping for .pl files which map to your Perl interpreter. If such a mapping does not exist, create one with the format:

.pl => C:\Perl\Bin\Perl.Exe %s %s

(substitute your Perl directory if different from the above).

For IIS 3.0, you will need to determine if your web server is compatible with IIS 2.0 or IIS 4.0 -- the simplest way to do this is to check your IIS server manager and see if options are available for configuring directories to run as applications. If so then your server is compatible with IIS 4.0, and you can use the above instructions to take care of the pre-installation setup. If not, use the above instructions for IIS 2.0.

Step 2: The installation program will prompt you for all of the needed information to complete the installation. Please be sure you know the following:

  • the path for the specified CGI directory where Personals/Classifieds's script files will be stored. The database directory will be created as a subdirectory. Example:
    C:\InetPub\scripts\personals_classifieds\

  • the absolute url associated with this directory. For example:
    http://www.mydomain.com/scripts/personals_classifieds/

  • the location of a directory for images to be installed to. This must be a non-cgi directory, so an example might be:
    C:\InetPub\wwwroot\personals_classifieds\images

  • a URL that corresponds with the images directory. example:
    http://www.mydomain.com/personals_classifieds/images

  • the location of a directory for html files to be installed to. This must also be a non-cgi directory. An example might be:
    C:\InetPub\wwwroot\personals_classifieds\html

  • the location of a directory for an archive sub-directory to be created in. This too must be a non-cgi directory. An example might be:
    C:\InetPub\wwwroot\personals_classifieds\archive

  • a URL that corresponds with the archive directory. Example:
    http://www.mydomain.com/personals_classifieds/archive

  • your company name, your name, contact email address and webserver software.

Step 3: The remainder of the installation is performed by the install-NT.pl script provided with your Personals/Classifieds package.

If your system is setup to automatically run Perl scripts, then just do the following to start the installation script:

install-NT.pl

If not, you will need to type:

C:\Perl\Bin\Perl.Exe install-NT.pl

(substitute your Perl directory if necessary).

* The user running the installation program must have the necessary permissions to be able to create directories and copy files to them.

You can troubleshoot the Personals/Classifieds installation with the Installation FAQ. If you run into trouble, we first recommend contacting your system administrator with system specific questions (e.g. the location of perl on your machine).
