Reflector works via a technique called "re-direct". This re-direction technique is used all over the Web (from tallying how many people click a banner bar to sending visitors to a different location when a site moves).

Links that you make on your Web site that you want track are actually pointed to Reflector, passing the URL that the visitor should be sent to. When Reflector is called, it tallies the visitor then "re-directs" the Web browser to real URL.

When you setup links on your site you simply link to Reflector and add a destination url instead of linking directly to the outside site. For example:

<a href="/cgi-bin/reflector.cgi?dest=http://radiation.com/">(UNIX)

<a href="http://yourdomain.com/Scripts/reflector/
reflector.pl?dest=http://radiation.com/">
(NT)

If you installed Reflector in a different directory than /cgi-bin, you will need to adjust the above link to point to your copy of Reflector.

When a visitor clicks the link in the above example, Reflector will tally the click appropriately (in this case, as someone leaving to http://radiation.com) and the send the user on their way to that site. Just change the URL after dest= to build links to other sites.

There is no extra administration to be done, when you build a link using the Reflector method, Reflector automatically begins keeping track of that links outgoing traffic flow.

Viewing Reports

Reflector includes a report program to display the data it has tracked. You can view this report by going to the report.cgi(UNIX) or report.pl(NT)in the directory you installed Reflector in. For example:

http://www.myhost.com/cgi-bin/report.cgi(UNIX)

http://www.myhost.com/scripts/report.pl(NT)

The Reflector report will show each distinct link it has tracked, and how many people have exited your site through that link.
